Lehigh Hanson is seeking a qualified Shipping Supervisor at our cement plant in Mason City, IA.

The Shipping Supervisor position is a perfect opportunity for the professional who is looking to develop their career within a dynamic Cement Manufacturer.

Reporting to the Production Manager in coordination with the sales department, the Shipping Supervisor’s position is responsible for providing an effective and efficient logistics program for the shipment of bulk cement with a strong focus on customer service.

The Shipping Supervisor is responsible for managing shipments of bulk cement for a high volume state-of-the-art facility. Essential job functions include the following:

  • Scheduling and directing the shipment of bulk cement products to ensure accurate and timely completion of shipping schedule requirements.

  • Direct supervision of up to 6 hourly personnel that work 24/7 during high shipping demand season. Coordination for plant resources when rail demand is high.

  • Coordinating all departmental work activities, including assigning work, BOLs, daily feedback on inventory levels of bulk materials to the plant, sales, and customer service.

  • Interfacing with Customer Service and Sales and Marketing to ensure their requirements are met on a daily and weekly and as needed basis.

  • Ensuring safe and efficient storage, and shipping of cement to customers.

  • Understanding all packaging, loading and material transfer systems within the shipping silos.

  • Troubleshooting equipment outages. Initiate repairs in coordination with the Production and Maintenance departments to manage equipment emergencies.

  • On-call responsibilities.

  • Update the Production Manager regarding daily operations, personnel matters, and changes.

  • Works toward continuous improvement in the daily process related to truck customers and rail shipments.

  • Develop SOPs for the department, revising as needed to eliminate inefficiencies and improve productivity.

  • Responsible for project development for future equipment and shipping area efficiency improvements.

  • Analyzes costs, activities, and operations to determine and report on progress toward departmental goals while keeping expenditures within budget.

  • Trains new and incumbent shipping personnel regarding shipping activities, operations and policies.

  • Serves as a role model in the promotion of departmental safety by following plant safety and regulatory policies including the use of personal protective equipment and taking corrective action to address safety concerns as they arise. Conducting daily, weekly, and monthly safety contacts and meetings with employees.

  • Follows all Company Safety and Environmental policies.


  • A High School diploma required; four-year degree in engineering, logistics or transportation management preferred, or equivalent work experience.

  • Prior supervisory experience with strong leadership and motivational skills

  • A self-starter with high energy to drive positive results.

  • Minimum of five to seven years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities and analytical skills

  • Understanding of chemistry of raw mix, clinker, and cement

  • Proficient with window-based PC software programs, and understand the SAP maintenance, inventory and business computer systems

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with clear and concise instructions in a professional manner and interact as a team member.

  • Ability to make timely and critical decisions - able to deal with a multitude of tasks simultaneously

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and will regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
